Add up the running load in kW, allow for the largest motor’s starting surge, divide by 0.8 power factor, add 25% headroom and round up to the next standard kVA rating. Example: a 40 kW connected load at 70% diversity is 28 kW; 28 ÷ 0.8 × 1.25 = 43.75 kVA, so a 45 kVA genset. Our free Generator Size Calculator does this for homes, shops and factories. It is an estimate only; final sizing is done after a site survey.
kVA is apparent power and kW is real power; for gensets rated at 0.8 power factor, kW = kVA × 0.8. So a 100 kVA genset delivers about 80 kW. The calculator uses this 0.8 power factor.
